Special Message from David Pettet

A Special Message From Executive Director David Pettet

March 20, 2016

As I’ve been writing in past publications, change is good and we see progress on many fronts for the LGBT aviation community. From airlines joining forces with us, to businesses and membership support at record levels, progress has been exponential. National and global corporations are recognizing NGPA and its members for their success and involvement in our causes. However, progress doesn’t always mean a complete victory. When our allies or community come under attack, we need to respond together.

Recently, in a standard AOPA pilot profile article by Barry Schiff, Pilot and Olympic Champion, Caitlyn Jenner, was featured about her history of becoming a pilot, and recently returning to the skies as a Beech Bonanza owner. Barry Schiff and AOPA stepped out of the box and brought to light a very dear piece of NGPA’s family, our transgender pilots. Unfortunately, Barry Schiff has been buried in hate mail regarding this article. I’m asking you to please join me in sending a brief note or letter to Mr. Schiff for his support for OUR community. Sometimes we know what the right thing is to do, and even though you know it may cause controversy or personal attack, we still do what’s right. Mr. Schiff did what was right, and he needs our support for bringing awareness to the aviation community that no matter what religion, race, gender identity, sexual orientation, etc., you’re still a pilot, and part of a very special community.

To show our appreciation to AOPA and Barry Schiff, please send your note of thanks and support to [email protected].

Thank you for doing your part today as an NGPA member by showing your gratitude to Mr. Schiff.

Sincerely,
David Pettet
Executive Director NGPA
